It would be a considerable uphill walk from Greenhaven as there is no trail head parking until you reach the summit. It seems, the old concrete supports are not being totaly removed, but rather just the outer most layer.New re-bar is being put over the remaining old concrete supports,with forms, and presumabely new concrete will be poured into the new forms. Across from the depot, visitors will also find a replica switching tower. This is one of my favorite hikes in the Clarence Fahnestock State Park. The first part to Whaley Lake passes several nice ponds with some hills in the background. Great for families or for distance training! This new portion will run from Pumphouse Road in Brewster to the parking lot in Hopewell Junction for the Dutchess Rail Trail. I rode south then east from rt. The pond is crystal clear and has a wonderful tree line right on the water. But I love this about this route: It joins towns youd probably never think of visiting. It is one great trail and it connects with the walk over the Hudson. Surface is very good and well maintained. Work has begun on the section between these, although it seems to be off to a slow start. All are great. There is construction equipment at the west end, but not much happening. I'm excited to use this path once the project is completed. Not-so-Good: The portapotty at the Hopewell Junction depot was disgusting and clearly had not been serviced in a very long time. Returning southbound is a little tougher since there is the slight upward grade. It's wide, clean and well paved. The Dutchess County Trail was in really great shape. I noticed that a few of the bridges are a couple of inches higher than the trail surface, and I'm not saying a little bump, I'm saying stop and walk it or fall off your bike bumps. The parking area is at the very end of Sunnyside Road in Beacon, along with the information board at the trailhead. But theres a piecemissing: the twenty-two miles or so that would connect Brewster, New York, to Hopewell Junction. My friend and I started at Hopewell Junction and glad we did. This is all part of a section of NY's Empire State trail, and includes off road portions in Kingston, NY (the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail - gravel), continues through New Paltz, NY to the Hudson Valley RT, across the Walkway Over The Hudson and then to the Dutchess section. The trail from end to end (18 miles) is perfectly paved with numerous bridges and parking access points scattered about all in pristine condition. About 65 minutes to the turn around point, very leisurely done but flew back to Hopewell Junction at 17 mph and 40 minutes. Phase 4, already planned, will be for a new bridge over SR 55 and will connect the phase 2 section with the southern section. If you're a local, you will know where the multitude of lots are, but since I live an hour away, I really depended on the app which led me astray. The landscape of the area shimmers with grassy hills and forests, green pines lining paddocks. Point-to-Point. Approaching the terminus, youll pass the Hopewell Depot. The stunning converted railroad bridge takes trail users over the Hudson River and leads directly to the Hudson Valley Rail Trail in Ulster County. Now that most of the snow has melted I ventured East from Greenhaven up Depot Hill by bike. While she said they hope to have it open by May 15th, it should be definitely in service by June 1st. No doubt in my mind whether or not its open. The last stretch, the Hudson Valley trail, isn't as well paved, but it's pretty short and still nice to ride. Parking is free by the road, hike towards the lake about a mile or so. This ride takes us from the Brewster Trailhead passing Ice Pond, The Great Swamp, a rail trestle bridge, and the back side of Greenhaven Prison (!).. Even a few hours a month will make a huge difference for the Hopewell Depot Museum. It goes parallel to the river and it is very pretty. Unfortunately, there are older segments that sorely need maintenance, especially the roughly 4 mile stretch from Taconic State Park south. One way mileage is about 5 miles, as the trail ends at the Connecticut line. with a kiosk - at the northern trail head terminus (and will be forever) at Morgan Lake technicaly in the CITY of Poughkkepsie there is a small like county park within the Morgan Lake city park with benches,a kiosk,flowers and now a new memorial for Michael Murphy - the southern end does not go all the way to the old depot in Hopewell Jct. Beautiful trail, clean and well kept and super clean bathrooms in Hopewell Junction. The trail once extended a few more hundred feet before hitting a fence. That section now runs along afew already-built, paved and bike-able trailways: the North County Trailway, South County Trailway, Old Put are a few (and theyre great). there there. Views include the Green Haven Correctional facility in Stormville, with its imposing and very high walls, and inmate sounds from inside those walls.
